The ACE Clinic: Assessing Adverse Childhood Experiences
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are shown to have detrimental impacts on children’s emotional, behavioural, and cognitive development. The ACE Clinic delivers a range of assessments and therapeutic services to identify children’s ACES and develop a plan to help improve their life chances.
About The ACE Clinic
We founded the ACE Clinic as part of our commitment to transform the life chances of children and families in our communities. The clinic is staffed by our Multi-Disciplinary Therapeutic Team which specialises in the assessment of young people with Social Emotional & Mental Health difficulties (SEMH) and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). A child who has experienced multiple ACEs is more likely to suffer a range of problems throughout their lives, including educational difficulties, emotional suffering, as well as increased likelihood of substance addiction and becoming involved in the criminal justice system.
By identifying ACEs, and when they occurred during a child’s development, we are able to create a therapeutic-education framework for a child that can support their development.
Helping Vulnerable Children
ACEs includes a wide range of stressful or traumatic experiences that children can be exposed to while growing up. They can be experiences that directly harm a child, such as physical abuse or neglect, to environmental conditions that impact a child’s development such as parental substance abuse or incarceration. ACEs have a tremendous impact on lifelong health, life opportunities, and likelihood of being a victim or perpetrator of violence.
Identifying a child’s ACEs moves the question from ‘What’s wrong with them?’ to ‘What happened to them?’ and allows a better understanding of how a child can be helped.
Our Assessment Process
We carry out a range of assessments and profiles to help identify the needs of vulnerable children. They are an essential component for building the right learning and support programme for each child. Assessments and profiles we carry out include:
- ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) profile
- Speech and Language Assessments including the TROG, ACE, TOWK, Narrative, CELF and CCC2
- Sensory processing assessment
- Resiliency scales
- Self-concept questionnaire
- Attachment profile
- NEPSY (Neuropsychological) assessment
